Oil for your car is important a blood is to you.  When the car is running, oil circulated throughout the engine, cooling it and reducing friction.  Many oils also contain additives which will clean the engines parts while performing the other duties.  

Changing the oil is the one of the easiest and best ways to maintain your engine.  Clean oil prolongs the life of the engine, and increases fuel economy.  The friction you need (dry roads) to stop your car is bad for your motor.  A motor needs a condition more like an icy road to operate at its peak.

Oil should be changed according to manufacturers recommendations, which is usually about 3,000 miles.  Many manuals will also specify that the filter be changed at least every other oil change.  Since this only adds a couple of dollars to the cost, most mechanics agree that it should be changed each time.
