Front wheel drive, for all its benefits, has put a lot of components of your vehicle in a small space.  Among these is the "gearbox."  This is the common term for the differentials, transfer cases, manual and automatic transmissions.

The transmissions allow you to have several different choices in how power is applied to the wheels.  Without these choices, it would take forever to leave a traffic light, and you would get lousy gas mileage.

These complicated systems, like an engine, have a fluid circulating throughout to lubricate and cool them, and a filter to remove impurities.

Manufacturers generally have recommendations, which are printed your owner's manual, for when these should be changed.  Under most conditions, the gasket pan and filter should not require a change until 25 - 30,000 miles, assuming that you follow the other service recommendations.
