An air conditioner in your car works the same as your refrigerator at home, except for the little mouse that turns the light on and off. It uses three major components: an evaporator, condenser, and compressor. Air from the passenger compartment is drawn out and through the evaporator, which contains a refrigerant. The refrigerant makes the hot air's moisture condense into water. This is why on a hot day you might notice a puddle under many cars. With the water goes the heat, and the drier, cooler air is now sent back into the passenger compartment. The components, particularly hoses and belts should be checked often, and the whole system should, at the very least, be checked and serviced every two years.
